Supporting Discovery Ski Area, Our Best-Kept Secret

With just a few days left in the downhill ski season, we’ve got plenty of fond memories of gorgeous powdery days on Discovery Mountain. It seems mother nature missed the memo that spring has sprung and decided to send some last minute snow storms—even as we have enjoyed 60+ degree days in the valley.

In 2014, National Geographic chose Philipsburg as one of the Best Secret Ski Towns in North America. We are inclined to agree, although it’s anything but secret in Western Montana.

Finding Winter Wellness in the Wild

Why a Winter Vacation Might Be Better Than a Resolution

Each year, the scientific evidence mounts suggesting the health and wellness benefits of spending time outdoors. The rise of technology has beckoned us inside, where we stay for more of the day than we may realize. The Harvard School of Public Health recently suggested adults spend as little as five percent of their day outdoors. As our perspectives have become more global, we’ve been slowly allowing our phones, tablets and computers become our windows to the world.

The Rock Creek bridge under a dusting of new snow.

In the winter, it’s even more noticeable. When the weather gets cold, we hibernate. A little rest is great for the body and mind, but we also run the risk of changing our habits to be more insular, inside-oriented and sedentary. As we write this on a computer and you read this on a device, we’re mindful that the Internet is our best friend and worst enemy in the fight for wellness. Read more…

Ranchers Behind the Lens

Winter Staff Photography

Our staff are some of winter’s most ardent fans. With few exceptions, they are dedicated hikers, skiers and outdoor adventure travelers, who’ve traded the hustle of larger towns and properties for the natural splendor of rural Montana. Before the first snow falls, most of the staff have purchased their season pass to Discovery Ski Area and have their skis and snowboards waxed and ready. Philipsburg is far from a bustling city, but it is continuously named one of the best secret ski towns and a “hidden gem,” alluding to the fact that sapphire mining is a popular pastime.

Our Human Resources department has this unique breed (hospitality professional meets nature lover) in mind as they hire seasonal and year-round staff for 2016. As the world’s only Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star ranch, employees at The Ranch at Rock Creek gain experience they can’t find anywhere else—meeting the high standards of the Forbes Travel Guide and Relais & Châteaux property, while mastering hobbies like horseback riding and fly fishing. If you know of someone looking for a rewarding opportunity and a top-notch resume builder, please forward our Career page and encourage them to apply quickly.

Winter Getaways: 10 Calorie-Melting Snow Sports

According to a oft-quoted Statistic Brain study, the most commonly made New Year’s resolution is losing weight. But it can be hard to stick to a resolution like this if you’re used to being a homebody in the winter. When January 1 comes around, it’s easy to choose a good book and crackling fire over bundling and braving the outdoors.

The Nordic Bonfire is one of our new winter experiences that mixes gourmet cuisine with fireside camaraderie

The Benefits of Frost & Fire

A Very Granite County Christmas

The tradition of decorating a Christmas tree can be traced back to 15th century Germany. For many, it is the epitome of family, history and Christmas. In addition to those meanings, we also adore it as a symbol for luxury in the wilderness. People across the world balance the rugged beauty of a fresh cut tree with the luxuriousness of twinkling lights, glass ornaments and edible garlands.  In November, The Ranch at Rock Creek staff joined over 200 community members in celebrating this custom at the Granite County Festival of Trees.

The Festival of Trees Gala Auction raised money to finance healthcare projects for the Granite County Medical Foundation. It is part of our continued investment in local healthcare and emergency services. In 2013, The Ranch at Rock Creek donated $25,000 to help pay for a new generator at the Granite County Medical Center. The new model ensures that they can provide medical services for residents and visitors even in inclement weather, after Tropical Storm Sandy showed the dangers of failing hospital generators. Montana Made: Pintler Punch

The “A” in August must stand for “arid” because it’s the driest month on a Montana ranch resort. Ranchers don’t complain because the weather is ideal for cutting, raking and baling hay.

The Ranch grows and harvests hay for our herd of longhorn cattle and horses

Soon we’ll be celebrating our all-inclusive Autumn Harvest Weekend and thinking about the fall colors, but for now, steady hot temperatures have us thirsty, conjuring up visions of the watering hole. Just like the best dude ranch vacations, the summer cocktail is all about balance—between salty and sweet, bubbly and still.

When six o’clock rolls around, Ranch guests head to The Great Room in the Granite Lodge to relax after a day of horseback riding , archery or hiking Montana trails. Cocktail connoisseurs may wonder what the world’s only Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star luxury guest ranch serves parched guests. Our bartenders craft drinks to taste, but we also offer seasonal drinks that use herbs from Chef Drage’s garden, syrupy stone fruit and foraged berries.

Philipsburg Pride: Home Sweet Home

Philipsburg, Montana’s Hidden Gem

To our delight, but certainly not to our surprise, our hometown community– Philipsburg –recently received a Montana Tourism Award at the Governor’s Conference on Tourism and Recreation.

Philipsburg is hailed as a vibrant gateway to Montana’s natural wonders. Located half way between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, this tiny town continues to bask in the limelight. Known to locals as “P-burg,” it represents the best of the state’s natural and cultural treasures.

Once a booming mining community until the Silver Crash of 1893, Philipsburg has been voted one of the Prettiest Painted Places in America.  National Geographic celebrates Philipsburg as one the “Best Secret Ski Towns in North America.”

Enjoy free downhill skiing at Discovery ski area when you travel to The Ranch at Rock Creek

Our guests who travel from around the world spend the majority of their time here at The Ranch at Rock Creek.  However, their Montana memories are almost always sprinkled with wonderful, enriching adventures they have enjoyed in “downtown” Philipsburg and the surrounding mountains and countryside.

Guests get lost in The Sweet Palace, the grandest old-fashioned candy store in the land. They sample the award-winning Haybag Hefeweizen at the Philipsburg Brewing Company.  They meander along the sidewalks marveling at the 19th Century architecture. They mine for sapphires of every color and explore Granite Ghost Town. In the winter, they ski like locals at Discovery Ski Area.

And, along the way, our guests meet some of the nicest Montanans around. We congratulate our friends and neighbors on a well-deserved distinction. We hope everyone gets a chance to travel to this hidden gem of the treasure state.

The Ranch supports our community by sponsoring charities and volunteering for causes that improve the lives of Granite County citizens. Read more about our efforts, including hosting and sponsoring the Granite County Festival of Trees and serving on the Discovery Ski Patrol.
